Message from Rev. Steve Longmoore
Effective Leadership
and
Healthy Pastoral Relationships
Hi Folks,
At the end of our Presbytery meeting in Harvey, I had mentioned the attached document that was approved at General Council Executive (GCE) earlier in the month that explores the possibility of moving pastoral relations/oversight and discipline into the work of paid Conference staff and that the Presbyteries would then be more mission/education/outreach/support oriented. There is much more to the rationale and thinking in the report, and there will be further discussion when the GCE meets in March. I don’t know if there will be agenda time for a conversation at Feb Presbytery, but I am interested in gathering feedback that could be directed back regarding this piece of work. I am not looking to engage in an email debate, just looking for thoughts, what might work, what might not, etc. Obviously, the details of this proposal have yet to be nailed down, those would come with changes to the Manual, so there is a certain amount of vagueness, but if you have reflections please forward them to me at
slon...@hotmail.com
.
Thanks for all the work that you do in support of our Presbytery,
Steve Longmoore

To Mission and Service Supporters
and Enthusiasts
Advent Candle-lighting services
Here are two new Advent Candle-lighting services.
One is for use in Sunday worship. You can cut and paste it into your Sunday bulletins and customize it for your congregation’s needs.
The other is for church families to use at home. The suggestion is to invite members to a wreath-making event in November and then offer the candle-lighting service to church families to use at home with their new Advent wreath. Instructions for making a wreath are easy to find online, and this could become an annual Advent celebration in your congregation.

Have you read the news from Mission and Service and the Philanthropy Unit? Check out the latest Philanthropy newsletter and meet the new Director of Philanthropy for The United Church of Canada. You’ll find it at:
http://www.united-church.ca/files/communications/newsletters/philanthropy_110901.pdf The United Church of Canada 2010 Annual Report has been mailed to congregations. You can see it at http://www.united-church.ca/organization/annualreport. Use it to share the good news about the Mission and Service work of the church.
To Do List
• Have you ordered your Christmas envelopes? Contact UCRD online at http://www.ucrdstore.ca/ or by phone at 416-253-5456 (local Toronto area) or toll-free 1-800-288-7365 and order envelopes #300 000 959.
• Consider giving a Christmas gift to your church children. M&S for Kids is #300001037 at UCRD and the sequel Hand in Hand is #CH10375. Both are $1.50. Hand in Hand has material for both young children and older kids, and there are ideas about how the two ages can work hand-in-hand to learn about the mission and service work of the church.
• We often think about consumerism in the months preceding Christmas. The dangers of marketing and consumerism are the topics of Overturning the Tables: Consumerism, Children and the Church. It offers lots of relevant information and also gives suggestions to individuals and to the church for overturning the trend. Purchase it from UCRD for $10.95 (#9781551341675.)
• The 2012 church calendar can be part of your fall fairs or fund-raisers (# CH10741.) The calendar features photos of stained-glass windows from United Churches across the country and can be ordered in bulk to save money.
If you have questions about any of the material in this newsletter or would like more information about Mission and Service, contact ms@united-church.ca or call 416-231-5931, Toll-Free: 1-800-268-3781 and speak to the Philanthropy Unit.
Thank you for your work!

Care of the Earth
Becoming Informed about ‘Fracking’
for Shale Gas in New Brunswick
At the June 9th meeting of Woolastook Presbytery, one of the three Sessional groups heard a presentation about the ‘Fracking’ process which is proposed for harvesting gas from the shale rock areas of New Brunswick. The sessional’s report back to the plenary invited all members to become informed over the summer, in order to better consider whether Presbytery might pass a motion recommending any course of action in our fall meetings.
Below are three sources of information to help us become informed.
Conservation Council of New Brunswick (CCNB) for more information: www.ccnbaction.ca
DNR, Provincial Government website: http://www.gnb.ca/0078/Promo/NaturalGas-e.asp
SWN Resources Canada (Southwestern Energy): http://www.swnnb.ca/newbrunswickoperations.html
Also, for an up-to-date flow of information on activities surrounding the development of Shale Gas, you can sign on to the CCNB listserve. Just email water@ccnbaction.ca and tell them to add you to the list. Information comes in one to three e-mails a week, so not burdensome

CAMP WOOLASTOOK SLIDE SHOW
Here is a slide show of Camp Woolastook photos that has been prepared by Nan Corrigan for your use in promoting Woolastook Presbytery's Camp Woolastook. It is just under three minutes long, with photos by Robert LaFrance, Jean Anne Green and Nan Corrigan, and music background by Linnea Good.
The Camp Woolastook 2011 Slide Show is available here in Windows Media Video format (wmv) and depending on the speed of your Internet connection, since it is a large file (about 10 MB) it may take a while to download and play on your computer.
Feel free to use this in talking about Camp Woolastook, including projecting through a data projector (sometimes also called a PowerPoint projector).
